Meteora
Intro
This is where nature’s grandeur meets with history, architecture and man’s everlasting desire to connect with the Divine. “Meteora” means “suspended in the air”, describing these 6 remarkable Greek Orthodox Monasteries perched on top of steep rocks like a natural ending of them. Visit Meteora even if your interests are not deeply religious, cause this surreal landscape can found nowhere else in the world.
No Legends and Myths for this Miracle of Greece. Meteora are not mentioned in classical Greek Myths or in Ancient Greek Literature .May this serene, mystical, magical, spiritual, breathtaking spot inspire you to create your own legend.
Majestic rocks dominate the town of Kalampaka in Thessaly. They are considered a rare geological phenomenon formed about 60 million years ago. It is about dark rocks, which have been made of sandstone and their height reaches over 500m from the sea. In Christian times, the cliffs were regarded as a perfect place to achieve absolute isolation, both physical and spiritual. Here, between Heaven & Earth, there were over one thousand caves, and the 1st Christian hermit monks s nested inside during the 9th century A.D. Monasteries were not built until the 14th A.D., when the monks sought somewhere to hide in the face of an increasing number of Turkish attacks.By the 16th A.D., the numbers of Monasteries existing in the site had reached a total of 24.
Today, only 6 remain active for people to visit . Once you take the decision to do it, consider it as a place of worship, where you should enter dressed modestly : Men with long trousers and shirts, women with long skirts and sleeve blouses. Experience the thrill.
